When water collects under a home and cannot drain away on its own, it has to be pumped out. A crawl space sump system gives that water somewhere to go: drainage carries it to a basin, and a pump discharges it away from the foundation.
A sump pump is a water-removal tool, not a moisture plan by itself. It works best as part of drainage, ground cover and humidity control.
Parts of a reliable system
- A basin set at the low point and connected to the drainage that feeds it
- A pump sized for the volume the space actually sees
- A float switch with room to operate without hanging up
- A check valve so discharged water does not run back in
- Discharge piping that carries water well away from the foundation
- A sealed lid so the basin is not an open moisture source
